Pure craftsmanship

November 4th, 2011

We came across this magnificent video that details the process behind the work of Paperlux, a Hamburg-based design studio who were commissioned by the graphic design magazine Novum.

The goal of the project was to underscore the importance of print media as the publishing industry increasingly goes digital.

A must watch for anyone who wants to see behind the scenes of a print project. Read the rest of this entry »

BrandZ Top 100

Axiom are brand consultants – we live and breathe brand design, strategy and management across all aspects of business communication and marketing. We believe in it and we have absolutely no doubt it makes a huge difference to companies who embrace it.

Unfortunately most companies cannot see the value in investing in quality brand design – for the bean counters it’s an intangible concept – the numbers don’t add up.

Well here’s some evidence that may change that thinking.

September 23rd, 2010

I was recently listening to a podcast from By Design – the ABC Radio National program on all things design – and I was delighted to hear an interview with Michael Bryce and his comments on graphic design in particular and interestingly the recent launch of a new design initiative – the Australian Design Alliance (ADA). Brand New Debate

July 24th, 2009

Part of being a designer is spending time looking at what others have done in the industry.

Usually this comes about by reading design blogs and one of my favourites is Brand New – a blog that highlights new corporate and brand identity design from around the world.

Recently there has been 2 posts about a couple of Australian designs – and what is very interesting is that they are classic examples of how to and how not to go about designing a logo or brand. Read the rest of this entry »

All good fun

July 9th, 2009

Came across this little short film called HP-Invent by Tom Wrigglesworth and Matt Robinson – a couple of Kingston University graduates in the UK.

This little effort was for the annual D&AD Student Awards based on brief set by HP – “Present an idea which promotes HP Workstations ability to bring to life anything the creative mind can conceive.”

One the most frustrating issues facing employers in the design industry is managing the transition of a freshly graduated design student employed in your studio from the “design student” mindset to actually thinking like a design professional – IE. Top 100 Brands Wield PowerOver S&P 500

April 30th, 2009

In the managerial pecking order within most firms, finance occupies a more central role than the flimsy business of marketing. Financial people use complex terms like ‘derivatives’ and ‘collateralised debt obligations’, and deal with multibillion-dollar/pound sums on a daily basis. Marketers are a simpler mob, occupying their time with more basic duties, such as brand building and customer satisfaction.

We are forever explaining in detail to our clients some of the myths and misnomers regarding copyright and the protection of intellectual property. Old adages like “Well I paid you to design it, so it’s mine, right?” abound. There is so much confusion out there as to who exactly owns what that when we came across this publication, we thought we would post it on our blog to help spread the knowledge and hopefully clear up some of the confusion.

And yes, we’re well aware of the irony of “borrowing” the documents graphics for this posts header image.

Can you tell the difference?

November 27th, 2008

Here’s a bit of fun that any self respecting professional graphic designer should score highly at.

The Arial or Helvetica Quiz

I was going to indulge in a very lengthy diatribe about the use of Arial in design and why we INSIST that Helvetica is the correct choice when talking all things typographic.
